"I hold it to be a fact, that if all persons knew what each said of the other, there would not be four friends in the world." - Pascal

"As to people saying a few idle words about us, we must not mind that any more than the old church steeple minds the rooks cawing about it." George Eliot.

Oh, wow, how true this is! It is a true treasure to find someone who is willing to speak the truth in love, even when the truth is difficult to hear or to face. I hope to be the kind of person who people can feel safe saying anything to, to my face, or, if they aren't able to do that, that they will be able to say it to me some other way. It's a humbling thing to hear the truth, but in my experience, it's even more humbling and a lot scarier to speak it.

Yes, I've got myself in far more trouble speaking the truth in love than in receiving it. I've pretty well figured that the world will get along fine without my input.
Which is not to say that I didn't put my kids in a coma with lectures and advice when they were young. Probably gave enough advice for a lifetime. :)
