I have read many quotes by Thomas Merton and he always makes me stop and take immediate inventory of myself. Now when I was a young man, busy to fill the emptiness, my self-concern machine left a trail of debris wide and long and wreaked havoc among many a soul. Wish it were not so.
Also wish I could say I am guiltless now.

Your post states a crime that most of us commit very often without knowing the consequences. Spoken words cannot be taken back even if we apologise.
It is said: SILENCE IS GOLDEN!
It is said that God has given us two ears and one mouth so that we can hear more and talk less. What we do is exactly the opposite.
This post reminds of how I lost a valuable order by speaking at the wrong moment. The customer took out his pen and was about to sign on the service contract and at that crucial moment I made some stupid remark. This distracted him. He put his pen down and told me that he will have to cosider some points mentioned in the contract and therefore he will sign the contract later.
You can understand the disapointment and dismay I experienced on account of this stupidity of mine.
